Well, I happen to like your question. People have been driving me crazy consuming themselves with materialistic things while they still go through life unahppy. Don't get me wrong; I am not a hippie living on the street corner, but I am internally happy. I generally like life itself, and am not impressed by peoples titles or money. I never feel like I need to have what others have. People are "killing themselves to live" and I think that is really backwards.

No offense but this isn't a Philosophical question.
Beyond that the two subjects you mention have no real correlation to each other.
The RAT RACE doesn't exist for the VAIN, and those truly involved in "THE MAZE" have little or no time for VANITY.
As a "fault" I suggest being involved in "the race" is about as vain as one can get, or as far distant from it as one can achieve.
Vanity in it's own BUBBLE may not begin as any more than self esteem, but at some point might become EGO on SPEED?
So sayeth Steven Wolf

I never wanted to be in the "rat race"....I'd rather not be a rat. I just live my life the best I can, I guess. I'm only in a race with myself. Yes most people are vain. Statistics show 75% of human beings are vain. This figure is 99% in L.A...tee hee ok I'm totally making that up. But yes there are a lot of vain people. Even in suburban Ontario, Canada...

If your referring to people working jobs as the rat race, I am confused as to how you perceive vanity in that? People that work are considered in the rat race because it is an endless pursuit with little reward or purpose. Like the lab rat running the maze. But there is always a pay check at the end of that maze and that is the reward. Then you go back to work the next week and do the same thing over and over and over again. But there is always that check. So I guess it's how you look at it. People need money to survive, and I'm lost at how that is considered vanity? But it is an endless circle of repetition and does get monotonous. That's where individuals have to get creative and MAKE it an exciting or at least a less boring thing.

The Rat Race is not a persuit of perfection or a vain persuit but rather the drudgery of a working existance. It is a necessary part of life.
As for vanity? Many people are vain only in the sense that they think that others have no right to criticise them. This is not the same as thinking yourself better than others it is simply an isolationist view.

You may have confused the phrase "Rat Race" with "Keeping up with the Jones'" Keeping up with the elusive Jones family would be a form of vanity or vain competition (getting something just because you neighbor gets it). If you only obtain the things others get so people can SEE that you have it too, you may not be able to keep up with the necessities of your life.

Even if you win the rat race, you're still a rat.

'Vanity of vanities; all is vanity...There is nothing better than that a man should enjoy his work, for that is his lot.'
I think the rat race is crap. Just do what you love. Keep a job if you have to, but do what you love.
