This could be interpreted philosophically. Before you go into a canyon (this could be anything that causes stress or anxiety), know how you're gonna get out (always have a way out, a backup plan, know thyself). You must use your 6th sense to discover the truth that lies beneath the waking reality that we see shadows of...auuuummmmm.... :)

Before you do anything, make sure there is an escape before committing yourself

But I like a quote from the character Donald Sutherland played in the war movie, "Kelly's Heroes" :-
"This tank has 3 forward gears and 5 backward gears ... I like to know I can get out of problems quicker than I get into them."

this plays of humans innate ability to retain their 3 year old attention spans and.....wander aimlessly with no set course.....and get lost.....then start flipping out.....then eventually dying. I say screw it. if you;re lost in a canyon, build a nice big bonfire and wait for the park rangers to come rescue you; that's their job.

Don't get yourself in a potentially bad situation unless you have an exit strategy.
