For example: can you spead a few £s on special light bulbs to fit normal lamps or is a £120+ light box essential and do they work?

I have bought both the light box and just the special light bulb and have found that both work well. I would suggest trying the less expensive light bulb first before investing in the light box. But make sure you buy the full spectrum light bulb. Also, I've found that taking B12 or a B complex vitamin also help. Good luck!

I have been told by a friend who has this problem that with just a little DIY skill you can make a light box. The light that she uses is one designed for use in a tropical aquarium. It is a broad spectrum white light called "Aquaglo". There are others, this is the name of just one brand. Any good pet supply store will point you in the right diretcion.
Make your wooden box to suit the size of the light you are using, attach the terminals of the starter (the power adaptor the light uses) to the box and cover the part you look at with opaque/ frosted acrylic. Make sure to leave plenty of room for air circulation both inside the box and outside when it is on.
The whole lot will probably cost less than £30 to make from scratch.

NO... they DO NOT WORK... Studies that were done have so many variables and there was NO correlation worth even mentioning in any article that I have read. My husband suffers from it, and has all his life. The ONLY thing that works for him is working out on a regular basis, and relaxing at night. It calms him down and the SAD goes away. He has suffered from this all his life and figured out about the working out part only 6 years ago. It really DOES work and he is such a happy person all year round now. Good luck

This is a cheap problem to fix. Wal-mart and Home Depot both have four foot florescent fixtures for about $8.00. Then you buy the grow lights or full-spectrum florescent lightbulbs. It will be a very bright room, but it will fix your problem.

The light can be irritating to someone who doesn't like florescent light or bright lights, but it does bring back the happiness.

I find that the alarm clocks that wake you up with light are really effective. Mine is a "lumie" something or other. It was quite expensive (about £80 I think) but I asked for mine as a Xmas present and I've never regretted it.

I don't know if they work, but everything I've read says they do! ( I have this problem too, in varying degrees). Another thing that helps SAD is to GET OUTSIDE during winter! You absorbe sunlight, get exercise and you'll feel better (I used to XC ski and hike in winter...it helped immensely).

light boxes do work. I made my own, using a grow light. It works fine.
