While thinking of band names, they brainstormed the name "The Genius Sex Poets" (which was later featured on the bass drum in the American version of the music video for "Mr. Brightside").[citation needed] The band finally came up with the idea for "The Killers" from a New Order video titled "Crystal." It was featured on the bass drum of a fictional band in the song's video.

After much deliberation the band decided to use the name of a fictional band in a video from English group New Order's song "Crystal", on the bass drum of the band in that video is displayed the name "The Killers".

I saw in an interview with Brandon Flowers that they all thought it was a really funny name because they are all quite the opposite: mellow, nice guys. So the Killers they became... =)
