Is it just based on damned geography? When will people realize white is a phenotype and not a social construct?

Its a unneeded label to be honest. Untill people stop trying to label themselves with a color, we will have no rest. Stick with being a, american, englishman, whatever country your from.

Because even though it is a phenotype, it has also become a stereotype. People, by nature, segregate themselves. So, even if we all looked exactly alike, there would still be stereotypes based on some other characteristic.

Assumptions, assumptions, assumptions!

Many people assume that I'm white . . . when I'm in the States. When I tell them that my father is Puerto Rican, they assume that I'm from New York. (stupid) They start to get that confused look when I tell them that my mother is Dutch.

When I'm in England, they assume I'm Canadian, because I sound a touch English. When I'm filling out forms over here, I tick the box that says I'm Caribbean, because both my parents come from Caribbean Islands. But when I do that they assume that I'm black and are really surprised that I'm not when they meet me. (Because in England, they assume that all people from the Caribbean are black, since most immigrants from that part of the world come from Jamaica)

I ask myself the same thing. I'm Hispanic. My complexion is about the same as the average southern Italian or Greek. I have met Greeks darker than myself, but they're white and I'm not.
It's quite bizarre.

Why do you know what social construct is and yet can't write the "Why are some people...." question with proper grammar?
