We all know that ducks go "quack", but do geese really "honk"? How would you render the noise of a goose to a small child, realistically?

I was chased by geese this very morning - but their noise is quite difficult to get right - go out and find some geese and you'll see what I mean!

Haaannnhhh! You have to be really nasal throughout the whole thing. It's almost as if the nh sound is spread out across the vowel. The major difference between this sound and supposedly onomatopoetic "honk" is that "honk" ends in a hard consonant, and no such feature is present in the animal's call.

I wouldn't compare the sounds of any type of geese to the sounds a small child...as experience has shown me, geese are truly unique in their honking, and perhaps a little like the snake or some type of insects in their hissing noises. Go to a petting zoo, observe some geese in the park...you shall see and hear for yourself...and look out, geese are a tad on the tempermental side ;)

Definitely a honking sound.
There's a flock based at a pond near here and they fly over head together at all times of the day. In the dark they honk lots more to keep in touch and close together.

That's why alot of people call them "Honkers" Canadian Geese are also known as Canadian Honkers, they make a deep 'honk' from down inside their throats which sounds just like a 'honk'

Hwonk! Hwonk! They make the noise through their nose as they chase after you! Believe me! You do not want to try and feed those things!

Yes, geese do 'honk' I would say it sounds more like..."rronk".

My 3 year old would say it 'quack quacks'

Say 'HONK' really loud and sort of force it down your nose. If you get snot with the sound you know you've done it right.

Of course, they honk!!! Have you thought about purchasing an animal themed "See and Say"?? I believe they do make them still!

BTW- where in the heck do you live that you've never heard a goose??? :)
