May I honestly say that whoever gave you that assignment is the dumbest teacher I have ever heard of? If there was room for an 'extra chapter' in Of Mice And Men, then Steinbeck would have written it. The book is a short novel to begin with - much of its beauty lies in its lean and terse writing, telling a story as directly and meaningfully as possible. If I was you I would downright refuse to undertake this assignment and defend yourself on aesthetic grounds by saying that no-one should seek to either add or take away a single word of this great work of fiction.
