It's interviews w/ Iraq children and has questions from American kids and Answers from Iraqi children - it will give you the answer to some of the questions you asked. example:
Question: My name is Erin. I am a 12-year-old girl from Texas and I love reading about Iraq. How is it there? Here, I am a cheerleader for football. Do you know what cheerleading is? Do you have cheerleaders? I hope so. It's a lot of fun. What language do you speak? I speak English. What grade are you in? I am in seventh grade. What is your school like?

Answer: No, I don't know what a cheerleader is. Girls are not allowed to go to sporting events for men. We can only play sports in school and not with the boys.

As much as the project is a valid learning experience,,, I'd not make it at all about the WAR in its main focus. They do not yet need to be politically motivated, but on some level the concept of the ORG. should be about "Angelizing"
I suspect the project can relate what all young girls do, wish to do, globally, and if WAR has to be included, then don't make it a piece similar to 60 minutes, showing what is desperately missing from the lives of third world nations and their children.
Positive messages certainly can allude to the facts,,,especially that in a FREE world, as Scouts, the girls might enjoy more than those who don't have the facilities or resources available,,,but that might make it come off as Elitist?
You might also consider some global "pen pal" org. that can connect the Scouts to others akin to them in Iraq? I bet any responses would not only state NEED, but DREAMS as well.

I'd go with positive aspects of the culture,,,IE: Clothing, dances, Schooling, Play time activities that must still exist,,,etc. and shy away from journalizing what isn't good.
