If this is for FastWeb, their "correct" answer is 998 million. However, their answer is WRONG.

The total number of pounds for those states is 1,021,900,000 pounds.

Illinois 457,200,000 pounds
Califonia 140,400,000 pounds
Ohio 111,600,000 pounds
Michigan 100,800,000 pounds
Pennsylvania 130,000,000 pounds
New York 81,900,000 pounds
Total 1,021,900,000 pounds

Not sure where the 998,000,000 pounds is coming from.
The United States Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service shows a total of 1,021,900,000 pounds for those six states.

"998 million pounds
Total pumpkin production of major pumpkin-producing states in 2004. Illinois, with a production of 457 million pounds, led the country. Pumpkin patches in California, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania and New York also produced a lot of pumpkins: each state produced at least 70 million pounds worth. The value of all the pumpkins produced by these states was about $100 million. (Source: USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service at )"

Though I don't know where they got 998 million. I get the answer 807 million pounds, not one on your list (457 + [70*5]). Oh, well, maybe they are including some other "top producing" states as well! Hope this answers your question!

I agree with CB, having done the same analysis using the data from the USDA NASS website. HOWEVER, this question was also posted on Fast!Web as part of their "Oktober Test" contest. When I submitted my answer of 1 billion (closest to the actual answer from the USDA NASS website), Fast!Web says I'm wrong. According to Fast!Web:
"Sorry, your answer is incorrect. The correct response is: 2. 998 million pounds.

In 2004, the leading pumpkin growing states in the U.S. (Illinois, California, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania and New York) produced 998 million pounds of pumpkins worth about $100 million. Illinois was the pumpkin leader, producing 457 million pounds. "

I don't know where they got that information, but it certainly doesn't agree with the data on NASS site.
