It depends on the doctor and what KIND of test he/she wants! The simplest test (and least reliable) is called the RAST test and uses only a small amount of blood drawn. Still, it give a good picture of what things you are PROBABLY allergic to.
The more annoying and long-lasting test involves injecting you with various allergens just under the skin. If you react, they know your're allergic and give you a "neutralizing" agent.
However, it is very time consuming...but if your allergies are severe, it's worth it.
Some insurance plans will pay for shots only, but others will pay for "sublingual" (under-the-tongue) drops, to try to make you "immune" to the allergens. Both methods have varying degrees of success, so it's worth having the RAST test done, then eliminating allergy triggers in your home, etc (pet dander, dust, mold, yeast and so on).
It can sometimes take years to figure out all the things you're allergic to! If you go to the site below (warning, the pictures might put you off!)...you can get enough info, hopefully, to decide on a course of treatment.

I had an allergy test done years ago and all he did was take a device that had about eight needles on it and lightly ed it on my arm. He watched it and could tell what my allergies were. I think the eight different needles were the only things checked though. Animal dander, grass, dust, things like that.

Samples yes, But they also have a bunch of needles that prick your skin with different type of things to find out if you have allergies to what things.

most often they stick you with a bunch of needles, testing different things to see how they react. Its not horrible, but if your highly reactive like i was it was very far from pleasant.

Multiple tiny needles inject different antigens into the skin. It is not too painful.

If they are doing a "scratch" test, they are going to poke you a lot with different substances to determine what you are allergic to and how much you are allergic to it.

it is pretty painless, but itchy! they put a drop of whatever they are testing you for and scratch your skin and watch to see if you have a reaction.
