Please don't consider this as a diagnosis, only your doctor can do that. However, here is some information on Costochondritis that may be something you can ask about.
"Pain in the chest wall around the breast bone (or sternum) is the most characteristic feature of the condition known as costochondritis. Medically, the term chondritis refers to inflammation of any cartilage in the body. Costochondritis refers specifically to inflammation of the cartilage that joins the ribs to the breast bone (called costal cartilages). The chest pain of costochondritis sometimes is severe.
Costochondritis usually, but not always, involves one side of the breast bone. Sometimes the pain can extend to the shoulder or arm on the involved side. When costochondritis is accompanied by swelling of the areas surrounding the cartilage, the condition is called Tietze syndrome. In Tietze syndrome, the swollen area of the inflamed cartilage may be tender to the touch, and the skin overlying the cartilage may be reddened.
Costochondritis is most common in people between 20 and 40 years of age. In most cases, doctors do not know why the condition develops. Trauma to the chest wall may lead to costochondritis, and it also is believed that viral infections, particularly upper respiratory infections, may cause costochondritis.
It is important to remember that any type of chest pain should be evaluated by a doctor to exclude the possibility of diseases of the heart or lungs, and the diagnosis of costochondritis is made only after these more serious causes of chest pain have been excluded."

There's a good chance it is mild heartburn. That's about the age I started getting it. It is not necessarily caused by anything you eat. It could also be something slightly more serious, like a form of a hernia, or (doubtfully) heart issues. You also vould have strained a muscle playing football, without realizing it. See a doctor. Sorry to say, but it is just the start of growing old...

Seems you want to shorten your life span or don't read very much or watch TV. Any chest pain thats reoccuring for someone 20 years or older should seek expert medical advice, there are plenty of dead people, who if they could talk would advise you as well. As for starting smoking, you are going against the world wide trend again you musn't be an avid reader of newspapers or watch TV, if you don't smoke don't start. Lots of healthy (or so they thought) people have dropped dead without any warning.

If the pain is present and does not change when you change body positions, go to the ER or your family Dr. and get your heart checked out.
If the pain changes when you bend or twist or move a particular way, it is most likely a rib head subluxated, or out of positions somewhat. Go to a good reputable Chiropractor and have him take care of you.
If the pain increases after a meal, particularly a non-healthy one, it may be your stomach. Go to your MD for this as well.
Good luck and God Bless!

I would go to a doc and talk to them. I knew a heart doc that didn't smoke, use to run, and died of heart failure. Doctors still don't really know the majority of reasons behind heart failure---but, if something is up, 9 times out of 10, if it is addressed, especially if you have warning signs---it can extend your life all that more. And, it could be something totally unrelated to the heart. Gotta find that out.
