Unfortunately the only way to relieve that poor broken toe is to do what is called "buddy taping," take an anti-inflammatory (such as Aleve) and Tylenol. These two over-the-counter medications can be taken at the same time (follow the instructions on the bottle carefully), as one addresses the inflammation at the injured site and the other addresses the discomfort.

To buddy tape, gently (and fairly loosely) tape the broken toe to the one next to it. Make sure the tape isn't tight, as this will make the situation worse. Then elevate your foot as often as you can and apply some type of ice pack for 15 minutes at a time (making sure you use some type of toweling around the ice so you don't hurt your skin). You can use anything from a bag of frozen peas (that will conform to your injured toe very well and can be re-frozen for more icing later on) clear up to a gel pack that you can freeze (or microwave for other types of injuries) over and over again. These can be purchased at some drug stores and most home medical supply stores. NEVER use any icing approach for longer than 15 minutes at a time....the same rule applies for moist heat.

If your toe turns black/blue, you may have sprained it, rather than broken it...it will take longer to heal if it's sprained but, either way (broken or sprained) continue the above-noted care and you'll have your toe back ASAP.

Ouch!! I have done that also. The only think you can do is....tape the broken toe to the toe next to it. Apply ice to reduce swelling 10 min on, 10 min off. Be sure to cover your ice pack with a paper towel or wash cloth so you won't get frost bite! Take an over the counter pain reliever such as Tylenol or Motrin. Try to keep it propped up as much as possible. R.I.C.E....Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation + tylenol /motrin and you'll be feeling better soon!

What I have done, tape it to a good toe, next to broken one.

Tape it to the toe next to it. That is what the doctor would do.

All you can do is tape it to the toe next to it - I've done it several times.
