I didn't mean to imply that posing an answer was harmful. But that by adopting a bad/incorrect answer as being correct just so that you had an answer was.

Personally it seems to me "people" just have to have an answer. Regardless of the merit.

Every person giving an answer has his/her own reason to answer, which may not necessarily include the awareness of the purpose of 'question' !
The persons who evaluate the answers (other than the asker, voter, and also perhaps the Yahoo team), are just gathering information about not only the question, and answer , but also the trend, popularity, human nature, and various other factors that the read material gives out ! Also, it helps persons to evolve by considering "Oh, it never occured to me" ... so it may not end up retarding growth, but may inform the present status....

This is interesting and seems like the right way of thinking, you cause problems if you let false answers retard progress. However, if all people were afraid to posit answers to questions they did not know, no progress would ever be made.

As with all things a balance must be maintained. be Daring enough to pursue new answers, even if they could be wrong, but keep an open mind and realize when a better answer comes along you need to be flexible enough to adopt it.

Humanities growth has not been hindered by asking questions....regardless if they are "answerable".....these questions serve as the perfect indicator that man/humanity is ok with not just sitting back and accepting.Asking is moving forward....not asking is stagnation and ultimately defeat. The concept of disease being carried by bacteria and/or viruses was utterly alien...laughed at..condemned by the all knowing churches...yet questions were asked..and asked ...and asked again..and the answers did reform our world from that position. What hinders mankind is the "oh well syndrome"...the giving up...the stopping of questions...

Very little. Even though answers maynot be good ones it is up to the person asking them to think them out. You say we are " obviously incapable of answering properly" these questions asked of us. WHY! In order for some one to answer it gets this person thinking about a good answer. Maybe this gets the person thinking more about the question asked and gets them asking questions themself. I see nothing wrong with that. This is how most good answers get solved. The more people think about and ask about things leads to a better solution. This inturn helps humanity I think.

Considerably, now and in the past. It is always best to admit you don't know than to be satisfied with the pretense of an answer. Some people cannot seem to be able to not have some semblance of answers to certain questions. If one admits he doesn't know, he will work to find answers. If one pretends he knows, he will do nothing to gain real knowledge and will often reject any real answers strongly. We see this at work in the evolution versus creationism battle. Lao Tzu said, "The value of a cup is in its emptiness". To gain knowledge, one must empty his mind of wrong beliefs.

Asking questions helps you to grow. Bad answers can't hinder humanity unless we believe them! Isn't it better to answer, to make a statement, than to say nothing? Makes life more interesting to hear various opinions. If it weren't for bad answers, what would you compare the good ones to?
