If you feel that he is or ever was in the same league as Zidane, Figo etc then you may say he is past it.
Beckham was a top player only when he was in England but once you moved him abroad he became merely a reasonably good player and no more compared with the quality of players who abound in Europe. As someone already said here, if he was that good a player Furgerson would have never got rid of him. I feel Beckham was always a little overrated. Top footballers and top football for me is players like the Dutch, the Portuguese, Italians although not so much the French at the moment. Until we start objectively to point to the weaknesses in English football, English football will continue to disappoint us all. Let's see how they will fair against mighty Croatia this evening !!
Beckham was alright but he has not fallen from any great height.

With G Neville behind him he'd do a better job than SWP or even Stevie G on the right. SWP lacks first team football after warming the bench ever since he left City and Stevie G can not play on the right for England, he wanders too much which works for the Pool but not England (defensively).

He is still dangerous on set plays. Other then that, he really doesn't stand out on the field. He'd be more valuable as an ambassador to the game (say in MLS) then as a slug in the top flight.

I agree that he could be much better now the pressure is off him. He has always been a victim of jealous scorn. It's what us Brits are good at.... putting down people who have achieved.
Give they guy credit he is good ambassador for the game and he makes a team gel. He ought to playing tonight, no question about it.

No I do not think he is past it, just that he is not as good as he used to be. But then most of us deteriorate when we get past a certain age, unless your very lucky.

I believe that he is still a world class player, just shouldn't be England's captain. I predict that he will be much better now that he doesn't have that extra burden on him.
