I can only speak for my own business.
I own a repossession company that is ranked in the top 10 of all Independent Repossession Companies on America, so I figure I an doing something right learning from the things I have done wrong, and there is not enough space to get into the things I have done wrong, so lets go for the right stuff OK?
First and foremost and always keep your employees happy. If you do not have happy employees, you have no company. Who does all of the work the owner? No the employees. The owner does a lot of work, but the employees do ALL of the work. If you have happy employees you have loyal employees, if you have loyal employees you go not have to worry about loss prevention, slacking off, that sort of thing, your employees are the ones who essentially sign your paycheck, they make you the money, of they are successful, you are successful. Don't get me wrong you may have to hire and fire 100 guys to find the right one, but when you find the right one it is worth the time and cost of the 100 that did not work out. Remember this: Hiring an employee is like sticking 3 dollars in a slot machine, you never know what your going to et back until you hit the jackpot, then you will know you have won.
Secondly is customer satisfaction. I have customers I have worked with for 11 years and never had a bit of trouble out of, that includes paying on time, honesty that sort of thing. I have had customers that I have picked up 1 unit for and told them to loose my number. Depending on the kind of business you are planning on getting into, the same would hold true for a vendor. It has to be a good working relationship, or it will never work.
When you become successful do not forget who got you there. 2 times a year I have a little get together for my employees, their families and the people I work with at the finance companies, to thank them for their hard work.
I do not know if there is an exact formula for a successful business. I have seen businesses that I would have bet good money on go under in less than a year and I have seen companies that I would never have given 3 months to go on and on.
The only thing I know for sure is be honest, be fair and surround yourself with the same kind of people.
