There seems to be quite a bit of conflict with the purchasing manager where I work presently. Whenever she is gone, seems run smoothly. However, when she is here, she has no tact, and is just blatantly rude to everyone.
From my own experience, for the third time yesterday, she finally hit it to me. Let me explain.
Last year, she was trying to explain something about a jump rope game from when she was young. We didn’t understand. She said “Well, I came from a sophisticated neighborhood, I guess that’s why”. She was implying we weren’t sophisticated enough to understand??
Next scenario. I’m in her office talking about my options with the company. I casually mentioned interest in engineering. She said “Oh, to be an engineer, you have to have great attention to detail. You have to be smart for that”. Hmmm….
Now, yesterday, she took me off Excel graph/pivot training, saying that only the “Big Wigs” back in the presentation offices will ever use those!”

I just figured out how to use one last week in a past due report I run every week for our department!

This lady is of color, and I’m not a discriminating person, but what are my rights?? Don’t I have any? I am a single mom with 2 children, and I am scared to say anything for fear of losing my job. But, why should I put up with this kind of stressful atmosphere from this tactless woman? She makes me feel so incompetent!

Any ideas would be helpful!
Thank you all!

Well, you need to file complaints with HR everytime something happens so that you establish a track record with them.
Discrimination can go both ways. No one should be holding you back.

Oh I know that feeling all too well... I used to work in an office about a month ago. They kept treating me like I was an idiot. She would keep repeating how the tasks should be done and it was like a month or two in the job. She kept treating me like I had no capacity for intelligence when in reality I am probably smarter than her and her two stupid sons that she keeps bragging about to me. I am in the honors program at a major university for god sakes, which is better than the university your son goes to. When she got on me for surfing on the web for lik 2 minutes I finally said that I quit and I couldn't take her s**t anymore. I basically walked out at that moment. I usually am a nice guy but when you are repeatedly condescending to me, I will return the favor. It's easier for me to do since I don't have children and all. I'd say try to explore other options if possible if you feel really bad about it. For me, I will never put up with anything like that because I hate it when people in a position of power abuse it and are unnecessarily condescending to you, but that's just me.

Just smack her, no just kidding. There is not much that can be done. I worked for a company like that for 6 years, finally I had enough and walked out. It is sad to have to deal with people like this.

She is full of herself.

Next time she says Oh only higher people can do that...

ASK her to SHOW you how..

Either she will and you can let it go..OR...she won't know how herself and look extremely STUPID.

Other than that, go over her head if you can and talk to someone, they will hopefully knock her down a peg or two.

not really, if she thinks you are incompetent, well there is just not much you can really do about that legally. You could go above her maybe. but being a ***** is still allowed, unfortunately.
