I work on an NHS IT helpdesk. Although there are many employees who clearly need IT support on a weekend, there is no provision. How long will this be sustainable I wonder. As a wider perspective, is it inevitable that teams working Mon-Fri will be asked to work weekends, to increase service provision and increase business?

Possibly, but they may just recruit weekend staff as they do in the retail business.

Mon-Fri 9-5 barely exists now. I supposedly work in a "9-5" job and I start at 8:15 and work until 5:15 with no lunch break usually.

In IT line it is difficult to maintain Mon-Fri 9-5 work. Most of the IT line has change to 24 hrs support. It is also difficult for employer to hire people to work only on weekends. If you like your job, sacrifice your time. Otherwise, change job or work in a medium firm.

I dont think that monday to friday 9-5 is going to exist in a few years time. It is a pain when your at work on the weekends and you need help and no one's there to help. People might just be hired to work saturdays but I don't think so. It doesn't exisit in the field I work in.

I remember when Sundays were sacred and you did not shop on Sunday and when the holidays were holidays Opening on boxing day was a major cash cow for the government since store were fined like ten grand for opening and it was stores closed at 9 not 24 hours or midnight. our society has gone to hell in a hand basket. values are on the slide we see this with the school violence as of late. if we allow morals to slide any lower we are no better off. this so called step of the future is a bitter pill to swallow our children cant go to school for fear of being shot or stabbed.
Where did we go wrong?
Let ME count the ways...

Plenty of people work shifts already, I think 9-5 will continue to decrease but I cannot see a day when everyone is super-flexible.
