hi Emma
cold Turkey
fill a glass jam jar half way with the contents of your ashtray, add boling
water...let this cool down

cover with the lid and shake

purpose of the jar is to smell the contents.. it.is stomach retching
and stops you from wanting another ciggerette,
take each hour as it comes and stiff the jar...it really works
i gave up five yrs ago end of october
GOOD LUCK

Don't buy the ciggies. Have a notice on your bedroom mirror saying what turns you off ie. men dont like snogging an ash tray/ my lungs are filling up with tar/I'm reducing my potential lifespan/do I want to die before my children and any other nice things to really cheer you up and remind you why you are doing it.
Also have a large glass jar and put in the money you would have spent on ciggies then treat yourself when you havn't smoked for a month and keep on doing that for 6 months.
I got off smoking 40 per day by using a nicotine substitute called nicobrevin but at the end of the day its willpower. What I have suggested above will help with that but at the end of the day the only loser will be you.
Good Luck

I have used patches twice and hypnotism once. I have just finally given up for 6 months using patches which i finished after 12 weeks. I found Hypnotism ok for awhile but think it's effectivness would depend on how open you are to suggestion during the therapy. I think the only thing that makes you give up is the want to give up.
My wife is expecting a baby and i do not want to subject our child to cigarette smoke, or get out of breath when playing with him/her.

I quit smoking 2 yrs ago after smoking a pack and a 1/2 a day for about 20 yrs. It really is pure will power. I had to stop making excuses and just make the decision to stop smoking and stick to it. You have to do whatever works for you. But the secret is that no matter how bad the cravings get, do not lite up. If you do your right back at square one. Keep yourself busy. Drink lots of water, chew gum. and keep reminding yourself that you're a non-smoker. Good luck to you, and remember just stop making excuses.

Firstly, its not 'giving up'. What are you giving up? Smelly clothes and breath, wrinkled skin, yellow fingers....eurgh! So, first up change your way of thinking - youre STOPPING SMOKING.

Second, these helpful things like gum and patches etc will only work with will power so if you really do want to stop, then youll be able.

BTW, Im a smoker, have been for 10 years, but I dont want to stop hence why I havent really bothered. Maybe I should take my own advice lol!

Good luck

I stopped about five years ago through sheer willpower, which I know won't work for everybody.

My one tip would be to avoid being in situations where you are drinking with other smokers. In the first few weeks of giving up if I was in a pub and got a craving I took myself off home early because I knew how easy it was to just another cigarette. It sounds boring but I was determined not to give in.

You can only really give up if you want to. If you're struggling, try telling yourself this: 'I'm the one whose about to open the pack, pop the ciggy in my mouth, find the lighter and light it, even though I don't want to. Why, in God's name, am I going to all that trouble for something I don't want to do? Instead, why don't I just not do it?'

The best friend you'll have is will power, but this is nothing without being self-aware. Just keep looking at yourself and constantly questioning your motivations - eventually, your brain will get tired of you asking the same old thing and you won't even consider lighting up in the first place.

Good luck from a 20-a-day man for 12 years - off the smokes for 9 months to date.

I really believe that the best and only way to give up is by sheer willpower. Just decide on a date that you will stop, and do not buy any more cigarettes from then on. I gave up like this on New Year's Eve last year, and after the first awful couple of weeks, it gets much easier.

i attempted to give up smoking several times. for me it was about will power. you won't be able to do it without that. you have to reallllllllllllly want to do it.

i did it cold turkey and it was hard. it was like losing a loved one! i was constantly thinking about cigarettes.

to start with the cravings are intense.
remember each craving only lasts about a minute so let each one pass... as time goes by these cravings will get few and far between. try drinking water alot.. that helped me. but be careful not to overeat as i put on a stone and a half.... good luck. if at first you don't succeed, try again...

i took me 8 years approx of trying to finally kick the habit
