People are too concerned with the opinions of other people, even if they don't know these people. They are worried about their appearance to others. They think they have to look a certain way. They need to get in touch with what is important and realise that people who judge you for you material possesions are not real people! It gets down right sickening to see parents in my daughters school community trying to out do each other with childrens birthday partys and spending rediculous amounts of money. The kids get involved in materialistic ways of thinking through the parents example!

Many people haven't taken the time to truly get to know themselves(likes and dislikes, talents and abilities).

They worry so much about what is popular that they get caught up in the "if I could only have....... I'd be happy" "So-in-so has.....s/he seems happy, maybe I will be too" mentality. Pretty soon they don't even know how to separate themselves from their toys.

We need to seek the best of ourselves not the best that the world has to offer.

Most people who think that way probably do not belong to a religion. i consider myself to have a soul. anything that has a spirit cannot be a material thing. if i were a material thing, then i wouldnt have an opinion on this question.

my opinion is this .. they think they need all those material things in life in order to survive. and by doing this it makes them look important, or have some sort of status in life. i know someone who has had a washer and dryer since day one, ok? and they said they would never go do their laundry at a laundrymat. all i said was never say never, you don't know what you have to do in life until you really do have to do it. you undersatnd what i'm trying to say here? there's a saying that my mom used to say ... and that was the neighbors were trying to keep up with the jones' ...

Because their sociology teaches them this if they live in the States.(Or industrialized nations) Look at the TV, and its shows, what to wear, to drive. I haven't seen , besides the Roseanne show (and even THAT later changed) many sitcoms where the families lived in a hovel-money=happiness...I hope this song below captions the understanding of your question.....An oldie but goodie

Anthony works in the grocery store
Saving his pennies for someday.
Momma Leoni left a note on the door.
She said, "Sonny, move out to the country.
Aw, but working too hard can give you a heart attack, ack, ack, ack, ack, ack;
You oughtta know by now.
Who need a house out in Hackensack?
Is that all you get for your money?
And it seems such a waste of time.
If that's what it's all about...
Momma, if that's moving up, than I'm moving out.

Mmm I'm movin out

Seargeant O'Leary is walking the beat.
At night he becomes a bartender.
He works at Mr. Cacciatorre's down on Sullivant Street,
Across from the medical center,
And he's trading in his Chevy for a Cadillac, lac, lac, lac lac,lac;
You oughtta know by now,
If he can't drive with a broken back,
At least he can polish the fenders.
And it seems such a waste of time,
If that's what it's all about...
Momma, if that's moving up, than I'm moving out.

Oo I'm movin out, Oh oh, Oo hoo...

You should never argue with a crazy, ma, ma, ma, ma man;
You oughtta know by now.
You can pay Uncle Sam with the overtime
Is that all you get for your money?
And if thats what you have in mind
yeah if thats what you're all about..
Good luck moving up, cause I'm moving out.

Oo I'm movin out
mmhmm Oo hoo uh-huh mmhmm...

I'm movin' out!

It is the way of the world. Some societies do it by the number of horses, wives, children, or whatever. it is simply a point of comparisim.
