sounds like hundreds of them. Any suggestions of how to get them out (without calling the pest exterminators)

Call animal control. They can give you the names of local bee keepers who normally come out & remove bees for free.
I really would think twice before trying the vacume idea. You then have to figure out how to get a bunch of pissed off bees out of there!!!!!!!

My father in law had this problem and told me that he used a shop vac to vacuum them out of the wall. They had built a nest inside the wall and he removed an outlet and stuck the vacuum hose in the wall and sucked them out.

I WOULD TRY TO FIND WHERE THEY ARE GETTING IN AT AND FILL THE HOLE WITH THAT EXPANDING SPRAY FOAM OR CAULKING OF SOME KIND AND TRY WHAT MISSY SAID WITH THE VACUUM.
