If you can't replace a "too soft" mattress, try getting a piece of plywood the size of the mattress to put between the box springs and the mattress. That makes a huge difference.

I have slept with a old oak desk top between the springs and mattress for years. Even when buying a new bed, I didn't find the mattress hard enough.
