What do you mean never caught on? I ride my jetpack to work everyday - in the cloud city.
But seriously: they cost too much and they're dangerous. Although they look cool, I would recommend buying a motorcycle if you want that dangerous look to pick up girls. Even the military passed on them because helicopters were just a lot more practical.

It would be huge to have a enough fuel in it to be able to fly more than 30 seconds. It wasn't very effictive at using the fuel either. Now there are prototypes with blades instead of Jets.
