I'm not a shrink but have been depressed (and am still fighting with it) for years. I'd say if you're just feeling down, it usually goes away after a few days. Sometimes, if it's got to do with a certain situation that makes you feel bad, it can take longer but will still go away. If you experience things like not wanting to wake up, not knowing what to wear, what to eat, have no motivation for anything, no appetite, cry for no apparent reason, feel suicidal, hopeless etc., then I'd say see your doc. Try to have a think if you can remember since when you feel this way - has anything triggered it, or does it seem to have come out of the blue? If there IS an apparent reason, try to think further, why it makes you feel bad, what would have to happen to make you feel better and what you have to do to get there; then do it. If there is no reason, as before, see a doc. If it turns out you are depressed, check carefully if you need medication or not. There are awful side effects, and it take a few weeks before it kicks in. If you feel really bad and can't function properly, it may be worth taking anti depressants (bear in mind, only do it if you really are depressed and it won't pass without treatment), especially when it can take weeks or months before you can see a shrink.
good luck, and I truly hope it'll pass!

Depression is a state of mind! If you think you are depressed then something must be telling you that you are? Get help, not drugs, they are not a long term solution. Seek councelling, therapy, get yourself out side, walk for half an hour a day, scream at the top of your voice in a forest, hire out a comedy film. Do not drink, or eat to overcome your problems this doesnt help. Activity and some positive thinking (if you can manage that) works. I have been there, done that, got the poster and t-shirt

Yes, clinical depression can last a lifetime. However, most people feel a bit unhappy, anxious or unmotivated occasionally. If you are feeling so unhappy that it is affecting your life - you aren't eating properly, not going out of your house, not working, feeling suicidal etc. then it will be a good idea to talk to someone about it - a friend, doctor or counsellor. Sometimes that is difficult but it definitely helps to share a problem. It may put things in perspective. And if there is an underlying medical condition you can sort it out promptly.

I once went through a bad patch at college, saw my doctor who took a blood test, but eventually felt much better after talking to a few close relatives and friends.

If the feeling last into days and then weeks you are depressed. If the right person calls or the right event happens and you get happy it is a state of mind

Depression will crush you for a long period of time and will leave you unable to carry out the most ordinary everyday tasks. State of mind is probably just focused on one particular thing that's bothering you and is fleeting. Depression is relentless and all consuming. If you are depressed it helps to get some kind of treatment/intervention.

Truly when you have passed the sadness stage and didn't do anything at your lowest point to pick your Self up to get out of that mood. At that point, you have made the choice to go further in the downward spiraling mode in the State of Depression. It's when you should have packed your bags for the longer trip than you expected it to be, and now it's gonna take you longer to come back to the living. Pity is its enemy. Don't listen to your head as it annouces how pitiful you are. Avoid that by all cost.

I asked a clinical psychologist what I could do to reawaken an interest in things I used to enjoy, and for some reason I felt depressed about and I could not awaken my interest. He replied, "am I still interested in it?". I said yes, but I could not mount the enthusiasm. He didn't have an answer and I ddn't buy him a drink. The barmaid was better help (even when she hit me with her handbag).

Is this the blues or depression? It was struggle to get the old wants back.

I wouldn't depend on Yahoo answers for your answer. Go to a medical website and read about the symptoms. Better yet ask a paid professional, sometimes life isn't that great and learning to accept the good with the bad is part of the program.

people who are really depressed loose all interest in things they use to love, they will stop wanting to wake up b/c they have nothing to look forward to. you sleep alot and sometimes you focus on things like writing or drawing bad ideas. it's more commonly called clinical depression and is not fun to live with.
so, ask a shrink
