More ram. faster processor

2006-10-11 01:12:49 · answer #1 · answered by god0fgod 5 · 1 0

Hi Mark >
Faster ? I type faster, but from a tech point of view, there is allsorts worth looking at.
I trust my local computer shop to keep me right most of the time,
so check out your local shop, not a big warehouse, where the sales staff are usually of limited information.
Doubling the RAM size is always a good move, as is a Vid accelerator. Or even just do a clean-up of disc operation using a bit of software, such as Norton.
The more stuff in terms of hardware, web-cams etc.and the more software that the system is trying to cope with, the slower things go.
Having a twiddle with IRQ's during boot is always worth a fiddle.
If one bit is saying "I am more important than you" (A lower number), switch the things around a bit.
By telling the keyboards that they had priority, with the mice second, etc. It stopped Bill Gates and his merry folks from dictating that they were more important.
Bugged me.
Of coure a total upgrade now seems to be equal to just aquiring a new machine. Running at a dear-knows what clock speed.
When is the Tera-Hertz processor arriving ? That should be quick.
With old hard drive & a shiny new E-drive.
Just some thoughts ....

Bob

Few things you can do:

Remove and uneeded files on your hard-drive and then defragment the drive. This will reduce the amount of time your computer has to spend searching for information..

A faster Hard drive....don't be fooled by High RPM speeds. Look at the actual average read, write and seek times. The quicker you can access data the faster your procesor can work on it.

More ram...or ram with a faster bus. Same as above...the more data that your computer can shift around the better..

Also custom configuring your operating system to only load software and services you need on startup. Things like MSN that run automatically can slow down your computer because they are loaded and ready to use...even when you can't see them.

A faster CPU. Again don't let the clock speed fool you. You need to be loking at the amount of work done per cycle to determine the true speed of a processor. For example...Intel's new M class of Processor looks slower on paper then a Pentium 4 from 4 years ago...however it does a lot more work per cycle and as a result is actually quicker.

Another thing you could do is to overclock your CPU...however this is risky, a bit complex to carry out and also shortens the lifespan of your computer.

It all depends on whether you want to spend money or not. Depends on how much money you want to spend too.

No money involved: When you are using the computer, look at the the lower right corner of the screen. Here you will find the computer programs that are running at the same time using computer memory. Exit or shut off programs you dont need. When I had an old computer and I was not in the internet anayway ( I unplugged from the DSL modem), I shut off my anti-virus program (this is a big program), I shut off both my yahoo and msn messenger (AOL too if you have one). Right click any program running and exit and leave only the one you are using - see how faster your computer works.

If you need to spend some money - Double your memory. If you are using XP, your minimum memory size should be at least 512 MB , double that is better.

The thing that is most likely to improve your computers performance is RAM. Its easy to add more, but be careful that you get the right sort of RAM.

With a Windows XP machine, you'll need 512MB+ for decent performance. Most machines will take up to 2GB.

Also don't forget to clean up your hard disk - delete temporary internet files and then defrag your disk.

1 First of all empty your recycle bin.
2 Then use the disk defragmenter(start/programmes/accessories/system tools/defragmenter)
3 Uninstall programmes that you no longer need(start/settings/control panel/ add/remove programmes)
4 Remove unneeded fonts(start/settings/control panel/fonts)

upgrade your ram and then delete all temp files and then do a scan for viruses and adware. apply all updates required then finally do a defrag on hard disk using disk keeper. that should help
also try cc cleaner
