A documentary on people's fave Subway sandwiches would be good - I got a lot of feedback when I asked the question on here! A food theme would actually be topical - maybe you could investigate what the average office worker puts away on a 9 to 5 shift - how many gallons of tea, number of choccie digestives, over a year - how many birthday cream cakes...

Interviewing students and pupils from the three main levels of education - infants, primary and secondary - ask the same prepared questions of their perception of their school, teachers, lessons, lesson subjects, pupil behaviour generally - then make comparisons with government published statistics.
See if what the government thinks is what the the 'service users' think - ask parents their views on today's three levels since they were at school.
Ask all interviewees what changes they would make - if any.

A Documentary is a bit like doing research - you start off with a hypothesis and a hypothetical conclusion - you do the research - ensure there are sufficient numbers involved to validate your research - say 10/15 interviewees in each (each interviewee being a hypothetical representation of a proportion of society) -then you compare your research with your hypothesis and draw your conclusions (hypothetically based) from these.

You might also want to approach this from an ethnic perspective - do they feel/have the same opinions as non-ethnic interviewees? And how do their perceptions compare with government statistics?

Seeing as Reality TV is still reigning as the 'in'thing' how about some sort of 'day in the life of'? It could have deeper meaning and educational value too, if you did something like a day in the life of a prostitue, or an illigal immigrant. Something that may change the way society percieves them. Muslim issues are high on the agenda - how about a documentary about them with a difference? maybe one on them commenting on Westeners for a change. Try and link the idea with something topical - obesity, cosmetic surgery etc then think of an interesting angle.
Something cultural that you may have insight to may be easier for you.
Put an ad out on gumtree loking for contributors and see what you get back.
Good luck!

I think you should look in the newspaper pick a topic and do a vox pop syle documentary. E.g, the issue about dogs, ask some people what they think and look in to the nature of particular breed like the pit bull or other.

This way people will have an opinion because it's new and also you can gain reports from police about incidents etc.

If the idea is so unhelpful, sorry.

Here is a suggestion (that sounds almost as if it could be on-sold to BBC...): do a report on workshops and individuals that specialise in the restoration of pianos (or perhaps violins). This is an extremely niche world where a small group of passionate, gifted people work. I once visited an "atelier" where an elderly gentlemen was restoring a violin and it was a visually and intellectually stunning (the beauty and passion of it, how little I knew about music/musical instruments/history of music). Just an idea...

1. Find a topic: Explore: what is important to you? Why do you want to go into jou hournalism? What message do you want to convey? What makes you happy? What hobbies are you interested in, or want to learn?
2. Find a format: "A day in the life of ....... (a baker, a musician, a banker etc...) are easy and inexpensive to produce. Can easily do with a video or audio broadcast.

The easiest would be a documentary about something in your area...like a historical place, or a place of great interest to people

I'm currently making a documentary with my friend about how awesome we are. We've found that there's plently to say. Do something like that!
