Don't forget about the DELL Exploding batteries. They have other quality issues. Don't get a Dell laptop.

Look at Toshiba. They are at many retail stores. Staples is a good place to buy one... (some of those other stores charge a RESTOCKING fee, so I don't even go there). Toshiba has high quality, good price and friendly and knowledgable tech support.

When you go to the store, you might discover that the Toshiba's are sold out... that is because they are in DEMAND.

For 500 bucks you can get a lowend Toshiba with Celeron processor, 60gig HD, 512 megs ram, AND built-in Intel Pro Wireless (saves you a hundred bucks from having to purchase a seperate network card)... Toshiba ONLY make laptops. Not desktops. They've made them for years and are rated by repairmen as the laptop they hardly ever see! And that's a good thing! Dell laptops have a 37% repair rate.

What is your requirements? This is the thing you need to consider when buying a notebook. If you're just for windows not much graphic, you can have a celeron notebook which is cheaper in all. If you want the latest, top of the line features you can expect a much higher cost. Now if you want the average feature with the average configuration, you can buy ACER, Toshiba, HP. If you're travelling international try to find out which product is offering an international warranty.

I would recomend Acer. The one I own cost me 498 Dollars at wal-mart. It had 512MB of DDR2 RAM (I upgraded it to 2GB), a Pentium M 1.7Ghtz processor, 40GB Hard drive (I upgraded that, too), integrated graphics with 128MB of graphics memory, 14.1 inch widescreen lcd (makes it good to travel with), built-in wireless b/g and bluetooth, and Acer's EmPowering technology. Acer doesn't add the trial softwares like other companies do and the tech support for them is ecellent. I consider Acer the "darkhorse" of laptops. I owned one for 6 years until I bought my new one and sold my older one. You can also contact Acer and order directly if you want to do so.

If you buy a cheap laptop, you will be disappointed. It will run very slow, and will not be upgradeable to Windows Vista when it comes out next year. If you can at all afford it, you should buy a capable laptop.

You can get good prices from Dell, especially if you or a friend works for a company that gets a Dell corporate discount. Watch for the sales.

Hi...i would recommend HP Compaq...cheapest place to purchase one is on ebay...bid for the model you want, and as they always have lots of normally the model you want then eventually you get one at a really good deal...you will see on ebay that their models are a direct buy from HP Compaq, so therefore you are cutting out the middleman.

dell laptops are notoriously bad! Don't even go there. I recommend Sony Vaio or Toshiba Satellite.

Or go for one off ebay. It may be second hand, but you get much more for the money than you would otherwise!
