I just bought a new LCD monitor and want to know if it is better to turn it off when not in use or leave it on and let it go to screen saver and stand by.

Go to Control Panel > Power Options and select a reasonable time of inactivity after which your computer will turn off the monitor for you. Mine is set to 15 minutes.

If you constantly push the button to turn it on and off, you'll probably wear out the button.

Most LCD are rated for 50,000hrs. Turning it off and on will wear the buttons down, but in sleep mode the monitor is still on wearing down you monitors life. Turn it off, and if the button breaks it will be cheaper to repair than buying a new screen. I fixed mine with super glue (the button was cheap plastic).

The failure mechanism is different for LCD monitors than CRT. There isn't anything like screen burn on an LCD. However, the lamp does have a finite life and turning off the monitor should prolong the lamp life. We have an LCD monitoring a server rack 24-7-365 and the lamp did fail after a couple of years. $150 got it running again.

Let it go into Stand-by. It's easier on your components. The monitor won't have to re-heat fully everytime you turn it on. Which saves power. When in standby it won't use any noticable power. This goes for your computer as well. The only time I turn my computer off is when I feel like it. Depending on your usage though, you will have to restart it ever-so-often to regain your used-up ram memory. Basically, when it starts slowing down, reboot that sucker! But it's recommended by most in this industry to leave the computer and monitor ON at all times but use Power Management... Good Luck :-)

If I'm going to be away from my computer for quite some time (an hour or more, overnight etc) then I always turn the monitor off.

I do have my power save settings set to swtich the screen off after an hour anyway, that way if I forget then I can have the computer save some power for me.
