I have a patient that does not have any health insurance. He does not have the money for home oxygen. He will remain in the hospital until there is a plan for him to receive home oxygen. Does anyone out there think that it would be more cost effective to work out a payment plan for the home oxygen (which costs a lot less), than to have the patient remain in the hospital for thousands of dollars? It's no wonder why so many hospitals are being shut down. I am all for the patient, but also for saving the patient money. Especially when the outcome is the same for a lot less. Has anyone else out there witnessed something simliar?

Yes, I work in the Emergency room at a rather large hospital. I have seen several patients turned away, simply because they did not have insurance. And their condition was not deemed an emergency by the hospital registers, who by the way don't have to have any more medical knowledge than is necessary for patient intake. I have also seen patients sent home way to early because there insurance company concluded that they were well enough to go home. And then patients like yours who are kept there running up a large bill, that they will never be able to pay off, when they could be set up at home with the proper medical devices etc... That is why I wish we like other countries had what is called State medical. Every one gets medical care and the medications they need. No matter who they are, what their income is etc..Our medical system in American lacks much.
Just my opinion.

That's why a lot of people join the military. If they can't afford health care, it's free at the Veteran Hospitals.
Maybe we should have socialized health care. That would solve a lot of problems.
