hello!!!! FOSSIL FUELS ARE DEAD ALREADY!

2006-10-11 00:39:13 · answer #1 · answered by Walter W. Krijthe 4 · 1 0

Fossil fuels do not have a life expectancy as they are dead. If you are talking about how much fossil fuels are left out there the way they are being used at present we have around 15-20 years on current stock and platforms. This is without new bore and drill sites and deep core drilling

depends on whether fossil fuel or oil and coal are still being produced. if a natural process creates fossil fuel then that process is still going on today. the us has enough oil in coal to sustain our usage for another 150 years. that doesn't mean we should not look for cleaner more reliable fuel sources such as hydrogen or to a lessor extent ethanol. I am not a global warming crackpot i don't think we can make that big of an impact like a volcano can. But cleaner fuels are a better choice for a lot of reasons.

There will always be some fossil fuels, we will never use up all fossil fuels on the planet, but at some point the cost of extracting / utilising them will exceed the costs of renewable fuels (eg sunflower oil).

Gas prices are less in real terms (adjusted for inflation) than they were 30 years. It's true, even at the new $2+ level. This seemingly defies the laws of economics considering that oil is a "scarce" resource. So, this suggests that new discoveries of oil are outpacing the growth in our oil consumption. aka there is a hell of a lot of oil in the earth. It will last for hundreds of years.

Considering how much more fuel efficient our vehicles and manufacturing processes have become, there is little doubt in my mind that our reserves will last a very, very long time.

Apparently it has always been 30 years or so, because they keep on finding new reserves, so the depletion date so far keeps ahead of the usage surprisingly considering how much USA guzzles up, and now that China are developing so fast surely consumption will now outstrip all reserves

according to the CIA world factbook, in 2002 it was estimated that Worldwide proven oil reserves were 1,349,000,000,000 barrels of oil left. It also estimated in 2003 that the world uses 80,100,000 barrels per day. unfortunately my calculator isnt big enough to do the figures.

in terms of gas again in 2002 it estimated that there were proven reserves of 174,600,000,000,000 cubic meters. with worldwide consumption at 2,675,000,000,000 although it doesnt state if this is sailly or yearly, again you have to do the maths good luck

oh yeah it doesnt have info on coal

What Walter said. But seriously, depending on who you listen to we have maybe 50 years of oil left maybe less, coal is good for at least 100 - 200 years if the US only supplies itself.

Hundreds of years here in the US, if Democrats would allow drilling.
But they won't.
Democrats will do anything to get gas prices back up.
