The cannifak is a large South American rodent, of a similar size to a badger. It is to be found in the provinces of the eastern foothills of the Bolivian Andes. It has a varied diet, feeding on bird's eggs, frogs, snails, freshwater molluscs and some insects. The cannifak was nearly hunted to extinction in the 1960s as it was a favoured delicacy because of the tenderness of its cooked flesh. Now a protected species, its numbers are believed to be approximately 5,000 breeding pairs.
