I'm doing a persuasive essay on assisted suicide and I need as many opinions as possible. Are you for or against euthanasia for the hopeless and terminally ill? Explain. Thank you all so much.(pleas don't report me for posting the same questions in a few different catagories. this isn't just a question to be a dumb*ss. I really need opinions.)

I'm not sure if everyone knows, but physician- assisted suicide is when the person asks to be put out of their misery. Usually doctors can give them lethal doses of pain medication and the patients choose when and if they take it themselves

Lucianna, I'm very sorry for your loss. I actually picked this topic because I am for pysician assisted suicide. I lost my father to liver cancer and I watched him suffer for a month. He couldn't speak, move, eat solid foods. After knowing that there was no way to quickly put him out of his misery, we did it the only other way we could. We asked them to remove all the machines keeping him alive. He died two days later. Thank you so much for your opinion n this subject even though it was hard for you to write what you did. Again, I'm really sorry for your loss

You've hit upon a sore subject with me.
I'm all for it. Assisted suicide and euthanasia isn't as horrible as people think. It's done for animals when they're suffering because it's considered humane, but not for a human and I believe that HUMANE should start with humans.
I watched my mother suffer for years with bad health. Chronic heart and upper respiratory problems.
She went in for surgery last June and while the surgery went well, other problems interfered. They couldn't wean her off the ventilator, she wasn't getting rid of the carbon dioxide properly and couldn't stay off the vent for long periods of time.
When all was said and done that was medically possible and there was still no hope for her long term survival and only the promise of more pain and suffering, I was told they couldn't overdose her with her pain meds.
I knew they couldn't, of course, I only wanted her pain to end and it was at her request/demand, that I had them remove the vent and feeding tube. She died three days later on the 26th.
Even in a long term facility where they could possibly wean her from the vent, her doctors told me she had MAYBE a month to live. They estimated closer to two weeks but agreed that it could be a month.
I got to sit with her for four days and watch her die slowly and painfully. I thought it would be better if she could not suffer so much. As fast as they could push the pain meds in, it wasn't fast enough to ease her pain.

I've been a nurse for 20+ years. In that time I've seen many people suffer at the end of their life.I've had many grab my hand and beg me to please let them die,it is heartbreaking.I've had families ask me to do the same thing. If someone is terminally ill, with no chance for recovery, prolonging their life helps no one.The person has to suffer with pain and the family goes through hell as well.It isn't any fun for the family to see their loved one in that condition and know there is nothing they can do to help them.
In a small way,it does happen in some cases.I've had terminally ill patients that were receiving mega doses of pain medication to keep them basically asleep all the time so they didn't suffer as much. The human body can only tolerate so much medication before it has an affect on the organs.Morphine especially with decrease a persons respiratory rate, eventually down to nothing.I know I've given a few people their last morphine shot before they died, and most times I knew it would probably be their last.Of course I didn't over dose them,I gave the amount that was prescribed.Do I feel bad? No.To me it was a relief to see that they were finally out of their misery. Doctors are aware of their suffering also and in some cases will order medication that when given over a period of time, will not only relieve their pain, but MAY also quicken their death just a little.
If I am ever in that situation,I would hope that I wouldn't have to lie there in pain and also have my family watch me die a painful death.I am all for assisted suicide,as long as it wouldn't become an easy way to just get rid of people that WE think shouldn't be around anymore. The circumstances have to be right and all parties involved must be in agreement.

My head says against. I believe everyone should live out their life naturally. My heart says...unsure. I don't know what I'd do in that position. Both my parents died from cancer. My dad went 3 weeks after diagnosis and my mother after 9 months. I don't know if I could have refused if either had asked to help them end it. Neither were in great pain. Sorry if this does'nt answer your question, but I think you have to be in the situation to decide

Euthanasia should be a choice for terminally ill patients. I understand some people's mindset on not wanting to "play God".... but that is their opinion; they should not stop others .Like in the Netherlands; Euthanasia is legal.

I'm in favour of it. Nobody gains anything in a few months or weeks more of unbearable pain.
