Goof is a derogatory term used in the prison system. You never call a guy that went to prison a "Goof". Maybe this is the problem.

this isnt a most men thing. it's a thing. i don't care if im called a goof, sometimes i am---lol. maybe he was called that about the way he was when he was younger. he has tried to change that image all these years ,but some how not knowing that , you called him a goof (or related word). i have a friend that you cant just say in what you think is just a playful situation that " your -- sorry " they would be fine with " you sux ". so now i know. its a button you could use, but i wouldnt if you really care about the person . so even with your question ive learned that there are words that we might not not want to use or call people even if we think its silly.

I wouldn't call them LAWS, but they are good guidelines. In my opinion if women understood the power of using even half off them (not agree with, just understand) life would be much simpler for both. I agree with Monterey on the toilet seat thing. As far as shoes and clothes go, I love the look of a well-dressed, sexy-dressed, and/or cutesy-dressed woman in heels. So I don't care how much of either there is. That's what spare/guest bedrooms and storage areas are for (well that's one of the reasons)...And if you're going shopping at Victoria Secret's or anyplace like you can definitely count me in!

ok although I'm sure I don't even know most men but none of the men I know or have known freak out over being called a goof. Possibly because I never say Goof.

I guess it's the same as women freaking out when somebody tells them they look fat. Guys like to feel they are in control of the situation. That they can protect their family. Women like to feel slim and attractive. That's it in a nutshell.

Now, as some have said, most men don't react to that particular word. But different ones are triggeerd by super-controlling critical, you must have everything perfect attitudes from women, mostly. This reminds us of our critical, super-controlling mothers who, although well-meaning, and loving, sometimes make us wonder why they broght us into this world in the first place.

I guess it is the human condition.

Sounds like you haven't taken the time to know your ol' man that well..... He likely has received some sort of ridicule in the past and that word triggers hurtful memories. My ex wife's favorite was "pathetic". She'd say it joking, but never knew until a month ago (we were together for ten years and have been divorced for one) that my mother's favorite phrase when I was being disciplined (abused) was "you're pathetic". Don't ridicule him further, respect his dislike for the term and stop using it!

Goof - lazy, failure to do chores?

Maybe even if he's a biker he still has some pride that he amounts to something. It is insulting to a man who tries hard to be good provider, and earning member of society to be a failure.

So even if he's a biker maybe he sees himself as someone who is still a useful functioning member of society.

Do you enjoy people calling you names? Why should he feel any different. Really, when you love someone, you don't say things that are hurtful. Give the guy a break already!
