Feel free to be as detailed as you like, I am experimenting with some systems and possibly trying to develop my own.
I'd be interested to hear some other ideas.

Thanks!

The most successful formation in world football, both club and international level, has always been 4-4-2.
However, you have to play the correct players in their correct positions, else (as with any other formation also) it will not work.
The 4-4-2 allows you to play a creative central midfielder and a holding player along side each other, and with the right mix, this can be very difficult to play against - look at Man Utd when they had Roy Keane and Paul Scholes along side each other and the success that team had.
You're defensively strong as you have 4 purpose players, but the full backs can also provide attacking options if they get forward.
2 up front as it's very difficult for one player on his own to hold the ball up and can lead to them dropping far too deep to go looking for the ball - remember Rooney in the world cup?!

Don't agree with having 5 in the middle as the area can get flooded as there are too many bodies and it does not allow the creative player time on the ball which would render them ineffective.

Hope my two pence worth helps!

well i will play either of these 3

this is a report

3-3-3-1 against a team that is good in defence like brazil
4-3-3 aginst a team which has a very strong midfield like france
4-3-3 against a team which is great in forward line like italy.

reasons 3-3-3-1 because if u r plying aga a team that is good in def , u wll l surely have to have some extra pressure in ur for line . so a player can have a back up .

well i have a five page report on it at my website

If i had all english players fit and at my disposal, i would choose 4-4-2 formation with

GK- Paul Robinson
LB- Ashley Cole
RB- Gary Neville
CB- Ledley King
CB- John Terry (c)
RM- Aaron Lennon
LM- Joe Cole
CM- Steven Gerrard
CM- Michael Carrick
CF- Jermain Defoe
CF- Wayne Rooney

Subs: Kirkland (GK), R Ferdinand, Bridge, Beckham, Hargreaves, Jenas, Crouch.

I would play a 4 4 2 (having one of the midfielders up front as a rolling striker)

I would also sack all the premadonnas of the English football team and have players from the 1st division instead, at least they want to play and represent their country. The so called 38million pound players think they need only turn up. Glad Beckham was sacked as he was well over rated

If I was captain of England, I would put this formation and these players:

4-4-2

GK Robinson
DF G. Neville
DF Cole
DF Ferdinand
DF P. Neville
MF Gerrard
MF Lampard
MF Wright-Phillips
MF Richardson
FW Defoe
FW Crouch

I would play a 4-4-2. The 2 central midfielders would have to be strong with 1 having good old fashioned box to box lung busting attributes. You need 2 wingers not midfielders playing wide, with pace to frighten the opposition and who can cause havoc on the counter attack. The 2 strikers, one would have to be a good ball player with good dropping off ability, who can drop into midfield when your under pressure or need to tighten up a game foe a period. The other striker wouldn't have to ba target man but would have to have good hold up play and a good eye for goal in the box.

I hear the 4-3-3 brown envelope formation is very popular

Who cares ?
this should be the least of my worries man.... so long i have 11 players on the field ( assuming no one gets a red card) ... why bother !

come on - this is what all of them have been doing - just follow this golden and revered tradition

what matters really - is how much comes into my pocket !!!

got it mate?

ok - one more hint

just add up the millions attched to the boots of my 11 squad !

very heavy isn/t it?

right - thats why they lost !!!!!

hahahahahahahaha !

When I started watching, it was goalkeeper and two full backs, three in the midfield, and 5 forwards.

Alf Ramsey ruined the game.
