Here's one way to think of it.
Most things act as containers for other things. For instance a jam is contained in a jar, the jar is contained in your kitchen, the kitchen is contained in your house/flat, the house/ flat is conatined in a town, the town is contained in a county, the . . . and so on and so on. But, and here's the intelectual challege, the universe is the ultimate container - it contains everything so there can be nothing outside of it.
Ok you say, but how can such a universe be expanding? Again it is our thinking that is the problem. We know that when a ballon or ball is blown-up it expands taking up extra space and we metally picture our universe doing then same. It is vrtually impossible for us to get our heads around the idea that the universe can expand into "nothing". But its just a unreasonable to suggest that something that is everything should not be able to expand - it just dificult to visualize.
Oh! As for the "how" try the link below and just to keep you up nights; consider that there may be degrees of infinity see link below.
Must have a rest now :-)

the big bang theory is not proven as some retard down there said but it is the most likely way the universe began and yes space is infinite and theres no reason why its expanding it just is like all the planets and galixys r moving away form each other

Our Universe is expanding along with the space inside it. The space inside the universe, called inner space (which is what is expanding), behaves differently than outer space, which is outside our universe. That's why it's said that space really isn't empty. They are talking about inner space.

No One Can Tell You... No One Knows About Space So Whatever The "Scientists " Say Is Called Right But How Do You And I Know That Its True. We Dont Because We Choose To Beleive What A Mere Man Says Rather Then What God Has Told Us.

The surface of the earth is finite, but without edge. It is a similar condition to space, but space adds a dimension. Space is finite, yet limitless.
If the earth were a balloon and inflated, the surface of the earth would expand, but not necesarily "into" anything.

I don't think space is expanding. The Universe is expanding, ie all the galaxies are spreading furher apart in the existing space.

we have recently found out that space is not infinite. The big bang theory was proven correct and because of that the waves are constantly shooting out and this is the expansion rate of the universe.
