Kerala is a state on the tropical Malabar Coast of southwestern India. To its east and northeast, Kerala borders Tamil Nadu and Karnataka; to its west and south lie the Indian Ocean islands of Lakshadweep and the Maldives, respectively. Kerala envelops Mahé, a coastal exclave of Pondicherry. Kerala is one of four states that comprise the linguistic-cultural region known as South India.
Kerala’s 38, 863 km² landmass (1.18% of India) is wedged between the Arabian Sea to the west and the Western Ghats — identified as one of the world's twenty-five biodiversity hotspots[14] — to the east. Lying between north latitudes 8°18' and 12°48' and east longitudes 74°52' and 72°22',[15] Kerala is well within the humid equatorial tropics. Kerala’s coast runs for some 580 km, while the state itself varies between 35–120 km in width. Geographically, Kerala can be divided into three climatically distinct regions: the eastern highlands (rugged and cool mountainous terrain), the central midlands (rolling hills), and the western lowlands (coastal plains). Located at the extreme southern tip of the Indian subcontinent, Kerala lies near the centre of the Indian tectonic plate; as such, most of the state (notwithstanding isolated regions) is subject to comparatively little seismic and volcanic activity.[16] Geologically, pre-Cambrian and Pleistocene formations comprise the bulk of Kerala’s terrain.
The countryside of Wayanad.Eastern Kerala lies immediately west of the Western Ghats's rain shadow; it consists of high mountains, gorges and deep-cut valleys. Forty-one of Kerala’s west-flowing rivers — and three of its east-flowing ones — originate in this region. Here, the Western Ghats form a wall of mountains interrupted only near Palakkad, where a pass known as the Palakkad Gap breaks through to provide access to the rest of India.
The Western Ghats rises on average to 1,500 m above sea level, while the highest peaks may reach to 2,500 m. Standing tall at a height of 2695 meters (8,842 ft), Anai Mudi in Kerala is the highest peak in South India. Just west of the mountains lie the midland plains, comprising a swathe of land running along central Kerala. Here, rolling hills and valleys dominate.[15] Generally ranging between elevations of 250–1,000 m, the eastern portions of the Nilgiri and Palni Hills include such formations as Agastyamalai and Anamalai.

Kerela is a state on the tropical Malabar Coast of southwestern India.
First settled in the 10th century BCE by speakers of Proto-South Dravidian, Kerala was influenced by the Mauryan Empire. Later, the Cheran kingdom and feudal Nair-Namboothiri Brahminical city-states became major powers in the region. Early contact with overseas lands culminated in struggles between colonial and native powers. Finally, the States Reorganisation Act of November 1, 1956 elevated Kerala to statehood.
Social reforms enacted in the late 19th century by Travancore were expanded upon by post-Independence governments. The living standard of Keralaites too is high when compared to the national level. With a population of about 30 million, the state is India's most progressed society in terms of education, literacy and health. In fact, Kerala has the highest Physical Quality of Life Index (PQLI) in India and the highest Human Development Index. With the highest literacy rate in the country, highest life expectancy, least population growth, lowest infant mortality, Kerala has been adopted by the world bodies as the role model for developing countries. However, Kerala's rates of suicide, unemployment, and violent crime rank among India's highest.[1]
The etymology of the name "Kerala" is disputed. The prevailing theory states that it is an imperfect portmanteau that fuses kera ("coconut palm tree") and alam ("land" or "location"). Natives of Kerala — "Keralites" or "Malayalees" — thus refer to their land as Keralam. Other theories have the name originating from the phrase chera alam ("Landof the Chera"). The Kerala tourism industry has adopted the slogan "God's own country".

Colorful Kerala is an enchanting kaleidoscope, full of breathtaking surprises. This fabled land is believed to have legendary origins. It is said that sage Parashuram, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, was looking for a piece of virgin land to perform yagna (sacrifice), thus he threw his axe into the sea from Gokarna (near present day Mangalore) and the sea retreated, resulting in formation of the beautiful land of Kerala. The antiquity of the state can be traced as early as 5000 to 3000B.C.People have been sailing to Kerala in search of spices, sandalwood and ivory for at least 2000years.The coasts of the State were known to the Phoenicians, Romans and later on to the Arabs and Chinese, long before Vasco da Gama came to India. The present day state of Kerala came into being on 1st Nov 1956, by merging two princely states, Travancore and Cochin into the Malabar, which was under the Madras Presidency.
The influence of Kerala’s trade links with far off nations and civilizations is still evident in its architectural styles and Chinese fishing nets. The state is an epitome of secularism and a masterpiece of unity in diversity. All the regions flourished side by side in the centuries that followed and the entire landscape is dotted with temples, churches, mosques and synagogues. The State has a reputation of imbibing anything new, but also holding on to rich traditions and culture. The people of Kerala are regarded as the most enterprising and industrious people in the country. Their substantial presence all over the world, especially in the Gulf countries has helped the country to earn valuable foreign exchange.

Though this land of rivers and backwaters, is busy raising valuable cash crops like tea, rubber, cardamom, coffee, and cashewnut, it still lives at the leisurely pace of ageless craft plying canals and backwaters.
