english politics doesn't really work that badly. i think that if england followed what some americans do (say in oregon) where politicians don't actually get paid (just their travel, food & other expenses) then it would bring out a different sort of politician & make the public respect them more.

we'd perhaps have more people who are in touch with society 'cos i don't think oxbridge graduates would have the same burning desire to ease the lives of people living in poorer areas of london as someone who comes from there & has decided to do something about it although given all that, Brown hasn't do too badly for us poor types none the less, but the condition of the economy when he got it kind of helped too.

i don't go with the flow unless the flow happens to be going where i'm going! but at the same time (barring a few natural glitches: iraq, immigration, integration, pollution, asda argos & tesco's detrimental influence on the economy) it does work fairly well

I would restrict the number of terms they are allowed to serve as there should be no such thing as a career politician.
I'd scrap any pension entitlement and certainly not allow them to decide this or vote themselves pay increases.
Given that all parties seem, at the moment, to be looking for some kind of ethnic or sexual balance I would introduce a "common sense" balance where at least 25% of all candidates should be non party members who can conduct a debate on a common sense basis rather than an ideological one.

Abolish the two-party system. It's corrupt and out-dated.

Insist on strict honesty in political ads stressing what you can contribute rather than trashing your competition. I'd rather vote because you would best represent me not because you slandered someone else and offered nothing better in return.

Insist on term limits.

Have the public vote on their pay raises.

Have the votes on every issued easily available on the net daily.

In some way, make them accountable for their votes so they don't just vote party lines.

All presidents should be independent of both parties.

Everyone should vote.
Terms should be reduced to 2- or 3 years.
More referendums on issues that affect the whole nation - ie should we go and invade another country?
Politicians should not be allowed to increase their own pay levels or superannuation every single year.
Campaign contributions should be reduced or eliminated.
Media blackout for all political parties two weeks before and up to election day.
Personal histories of major candidates made public before election.
More public debate between candidates.
A thorough plan of what, where , how and why to be made public before election day to cover the term of office.
Reactionary politics, mudslinging, and name calling, should be made illegal and incur harsh penalties.

I'd have Tony Bliar arrested for lying to the British People and to Parliament, then flown to the ICC court and have him prosecuted for War Crimes.
The beauty of that is that it would terrify all the other MPs around him and none of them would be tempted to do much lying again... Not for quite a while, anyhow...!!!

The "Big Money" has to go...
Campaign spending should be limited. Lobbyist's contributions should be banned. Mandatory candidate debates. Congressional and Senate term limitations.

I would change our policies with regards to the elderly, the homeless, and that old favourite immigration. These changes should be made to assist the general british public.
