Here is an unbiased anwer, I am a smoker and actually proud to be one and do not intend on quitting any time soon.

Smoking for non smokers is an enigma, you think it is only a nasty habit and that it is not so hard to quit. Unfortunatly, I can not ask you to put your self in my shoes, because you simply can not. It would take you years to be in my shoes in order to understand the satisfaction a smoker gets from tobacco.

It kills? well, yes it can kill but so can cars, bikes, fast food, nature etc. I could lead a very healthy life style and die at the age of 40 for no good reason. We tend to believe in destiny, live a happy, fulfilling life, have fun and enjoy the moment.

We are all gonna die anyway, it is a question of when not if. So why not just enjoy our time here on this planet.

Cheers

I can not answer on behalf of all smokers. However, as an ex-smoker myself who smoked for more than 20 years, I can tell you how it started with me and my friends. As teenagers we thought it was a cool thing, promoted by Hollywood films and TV shows of the day, etc. Famous celebrities used to pause with cigarettes, these days it was not as stigmatic as it is nowadays. Also it indicated that you were a grown up, and we just could not wait to get there and be treated as grown ups. Ended up smoking 40 of the horrible things per day. I happily quit five years ago. That's one story, hope it helps.

Like alot of things in life its an addiction. Some people are addicted to food and suffer from that. Anything you do in life question how much it too much and think about your health and question if it's worth it.

Peer pressure plays a big part in what we do in life also, do what you know is right.
