Yes, I have gone by to Delhi from Mumbai, by road. National Highway number 8 is the best road. It is 1419 kms long. It starts from the western express highway in Mumbai and ends at Delhi. Along the way, it passes through Silvassa. Surat, Baroda (Vadodara), Gandhinagar, Udaipur, Chittorgarh, Ajmer and reaches Delhi. The highway is self-guiding along with many places to stop like hotels, petrol pumps, etc. There are no safety hazards, provided you have a good vehicle, Make sure that your vehicle tyres are in good condition, including the spare tyre. Carry enough water in the vehicle, in case it overloads. Carry all the vehicle's ownership-papers, since there are check-points along the highway. And most important of all, do not be tempted to drive fast, even if the road in front of you is empty. One person, who I knew, died in an accident because he was driving fast at night when the road was completely empty and all of a sudden, on black buffalo came in the middle of the road from no-where. The buffalo was thrown off to the other end of the road by the impact of the accident and the driver driver died on the spot because the steering wheel had smashed his lung right through his ribcage even though he was wearing seat belts. So be careful about this. My friend who is an experienced driver told me that these buffaloes and other cattle, don't move from their position, if they get very frightened from the approaching vehicle on the road. This is because they are temporarily blinded by the headlights of the approaching vehicle. So, as long as you drive safely within a speed limit with which you can control the car, you have nothing to worry about. Remember, the safest drivers are the most careful drivers.
Have a happy and safe journey. Godspeed.

NH-8 (Delhi-Mumbai), which is 1,419 km long, is now 100% complete. The route is Delhi - Jaipur - Ajmer -Chittorgarh - Udaipur - Gandhinagar - Vadodara - Surat - Silvassa - Mumbai.
...I am told that the route is well laid-out, with adequate provisions for food and halts. And as long as you travel at the recommended speeds, there are very few chances of getting involved in any accidents - as you will be driving along a 1-way lane, where no vehicle can collide with yours, from the opposite direction !

I'd pack the family in an armored Land Rover...oh....and OBEY THE TRAFFIC LAWS. Run a simple stop sign and see how many "police" flashing MACHINE GUNS you attract; one would think you just robbed a bank.
Otherwise....sighhhh.....have fun and drive safely. Personally, however, I'd try to find a less politically chaotic place to take the kids on vacation.
