Send little flyers out the week before to invite your neighbours and warn them of the event (if they're the kind who might not like it!!) Let them know the kinds of things you will be selling. No point in holding the sale if you don't advertise it - you'll have no customers!!
You obviously want to shift the stuff so don't ask too much money for things otherwise they won't sell and you'll be stuck with them again. Lots of pennies add up in the end!!
Try to have a little organisation when you set things out: toys in one section, kitchen things here, CD's there - then put signs up so people can clearly find things they might be looking for - esp if you have lots of small things.
Put larger items at the back, so that they don't block the view of smaller things.
Have a money float - so that you can give change - you'd be surprised how many people will come with notes rather than coins. Not having enough change could lose you a sale. Keep it in a tin or in an apron - but don't lose sight of it - there are some nasty people around. Try to keep an eye on the things you're selling (for the same reason).
Don't promise to put something aside for someone - they rarely come back!! Just say that if it's still there when they return, then they can have it!!
Clean things up to make them look more attractive - you'll have more chance selling then and will be able to sell them for a little more.
Do put out things you might have thrown away - you'll be astonished at the old addage "one man's rubbish is another man's gold" - people will buy anything if they think it's a bargain.
Get a cheap clothes rack to display clothes - this keeps them in good order and makes it easier to see what you have.
Have Fun

Advertise in newspaper. Change float. Ask neighbours if they wish to sell anything and record whatever they might put in. Expect dealers at first light. Place substantial and readable signs in large thick letters at two or more street corners and outside the house. Make sure they don't blow away or fall over as soon as you turn your back. Just put on it "Garage Sale" and maybe an arrow to show the direction.

First of all on the day make sure you have heaps of loose change and bags or boxes for the buyers to carry their things home.
Look for free classifieds on the internet that you can post your sale on.
Put up lots of signs at shopping centres, traffic lights, intersections, schools and bus stops.
Don't overprice your things - every though you may have purchased something that cost a lot of money, chances are that you won't get the same price as what you paid for it

have a few helpers who know what they are doing so you dont get bombarded & nothing gets stolen while you are busy with someone else.
Mark the items with a slightly higher price (like something you want $2 for mark as $2.50) because people do like to find a bargin, even more so if they think they managed to talk you down from what you wanted.
Keep an eye on the weather for the whole week before you plan on having it just to make sure you dont get caught out in wind or rain.
Thats all I've got for now!!

Make sure the prices are reasonable
Don't prejudge what people will and won't buy - one man's rubbish is someone else's treasure
Obscure little things like electrical leads, plugs, tiny bits of gadgets and gizmos fascinate people and are sometimes 'just what they've been looking for'.
