Is it as bad as some say? In many cases, it can indeed be difficult. Those with a pension, or social security, often find it insufficient to cover expenses, especially with the inevitable medical costs associated with old age. And, when they attempt to find work to supplement that, they often have very limited options, most offering only very low wages.
On top of the financial difficulties, there is also the personal aspects. As friends their own age die off, they have fewer and fewer people to associate with - especially when so few young people want to have anything to do with them. Likewise, the inevitable death of a spouse can be devastating. In the end, many say the sheer loneliness is the most difficult part of being old.
Our society has not done a good job of caring for the elderly. For one thing, we need to do a much better job of keeping them integrated into the society as a whole. Of course, taking away their drivers licenses, with limited public transportation available, is probably not the best way to accomplish that.

I imagine it depends on your health. If you can get about physically (assisted by a free bus pass) and can afford to take advantages of the concessions given to retired people (theatre tickets, cheap holidays, cheap lunches at local restaurants) then you can have a really good time. You don't have to worry about having to get up for work, having to meet deadlines, being forced to be nice to disagreeable colleagues, etc. etc.) You can dream up outrageous things to do to shock everyone (like salsa or kick boxing classes) and you can say all kinds of things to people on the grounds that you are a "little old lady" or an "old buffer" which younger people would never get away with. But the strange thing is, however one may look externally and however fragile one feels, it seems that deep inside a person never grows old. I've heard that from enough old people to believe it.
I'm in training for the age group mentioned. I get up every day for a 40 lap swim and later do exercises at home or go for a walk on the beach. I realise that one has to invest in order to benefit from old age, not just in financial terms but in physical terms. There's something in the saying "a healthy mind in a healthy body" ("mens sana in corpore sano"). We should all be training for a healthy old age long before it happens!

It is great I enjoy it, it is the golden age. Great and peaceful because you know the things you wanted to know. Great because you have time to take care of yourself and do all the things you always wanted to do and could not do when younger.
Great because you can travel the world and have money for it from your working hard when younger. Great because you can work at home on the things you love most and do your hobbies. Great because people like you are friendly and attentionate.
I just turned 70 and I can't believe life is so good to me now. I expect to live 20 or 25 more years!
I would not wish to go through my youth again, it was too hard. Amitiés. Salut.

My Dad is 84 years old. For FUN he bought a Bobcat and is clearing off 10 acres of land to develop. He drives a brand new Hummer 2---with a handicap sticker (scary huh?) works out at the gym, has 2 girl friends, dances, goes out for dinner 5 nights a week, and travels all over the world. He just sold his 40 foot motor home. He is having a GRAND time. I think age is a mind thing. If you act old, you are old.

My dads approaching 60 and I can't see him stopping at 65, he goes away 3 or 4 times a year, still runs his business and drives a motor bike. On the whole I'm sure he's quite happy. I think if he retired he'd miss the busy schedule in his life.

My Mum and Dad retired last year and they are having the time of their lives. They get up when they want (and go back to bed to read the papers and drink tea!), the go to the gym three times a week (keeping themselves fit for the grandchildren!) and best of all, so they say, the pension fairy deposits money in their bank account every month, for nothing! Sounds pretty good to me!
