Toyota do a mechanism for one car which I believe hoists the buggy in to the boot? My mum is too old to lift the thing in to the car for my dad

You can buy a hoist that will fit in any car. I would suggest the Ford C-Max as it can be bought relatively cheaply with a very frugal diesel engine, is comfortable and easy to get into and has easily foldable rear seats. The only problem would be the seat on the scooter, as these sometimes have to be removed for them to fit into the vehicle. If this is the case, then I suggest a van-like car - the Fiat Doblo is good, can be bought with a frugal 1.3 diesel, and will take a scooter even with a tall seat with a headrest.

Hope that helps.
