As to the question on whether these are backed by US right wing christian fundamentalists, I really don't think so. They have enough problems in their own country, let alone the Middle East. As for big American businesses - there are enough legitimate methods to promote their interests - for example lobbying the government, paying for foreign 'fact finding' missions for MPs etc. Also, let's be honest, Britain is pretty small fry really. If this really goes on, China is probably the country that they should be spending their spying budgets on.
