It all depends on your faith. Unless you are Catholic, you have no need for canon law, in a doctrinal sense. The only "canon" one needs to be a christian are thus:

1. Baptism for the remittance of sin.
2. Repentance for said sin.
3. A whole and binding faith That Jesus of Nazareth is the Son of God and was crucified, dead and buried, as a sacrifice for your sin. And was raised on the Third day, to sit as judge for all mankind. A whole and perfect salvation.
4. To understand that the whole of Jewish law was circumscribed by the two great commissions of Christ
" love your God with all your heart, mind, and soul"
and
" do unto others, as you would have them do unto you"

As The Christ said. The whole of the law of Moses is contained in these to Great commands.

Anything beyond this is Legalism, and is the same trap that held the Sadduces and Pharisees in the day of Christ.

Christianity is a process and it should be aesthetic( in constant progress). There is a lot to learn from people in the past that lived their faith to their maximum before us. They lay down the way to Christ. Cannons are needed because of the multiplicity of cultural baggage and different stages in Human physical and emotional, spiritual development not every one is at the same level of knowledge or experience. Canon assures the basic you need to have to function into the parameters of Christianity regardless of your cultural baggage. In Ideal conditions once you mature and evolved into a personal understanding and assimilation of the faith you will surpass the canons but they are there to indicate the Yei'sand Nei's in the road.
