It's not difficult, 800 numbers have become less expensive, you should look into it through different companies to be able to choose the best plan and minutes, incentives and offers, start off by contacting some of the well known companies, but mainly your local phone company, then AT& T, Spring and MCI, I recall calling them, there are many more (new ones) do a google search, type in buying a 800 number.

It's pretty easy, but you don't "buy" it, it's not a product it's a service. Call any long distance carrier and ask for an 800 number and if you want it to ring to your home or place of business you tell them to "point" it to that number. If you want a specific number (like 1 800 TPMIKE2) first call it, if someone answers, well it's taken (sorry for statiing the obvious) if no answer or recording indicating it's a dead number you can request it through your phone company. 800 numbers per se are for the most part gone, but you can ask for a toll free number and you'll get an 8xx (877, 866 etc) number....

your local telephone will rent or sell you one...[usually you pay a monthly fee....and i might add that you pay a fee for each incoming call on some plans and no fee on another plan .,..ask how many plans they have to offer
also many answering services have 800 numbers that you can rent also... check both out and decide what way to go is the best for you...............
