An American friend has sent me a home-made DVD of a recent visit ( made apparently with Super DVD Creator [mastersoft.http.//www.alldj.com ] which plays fine on my PC but when I try to run it on my HD/DVD player , so as to watch on TV , I get the message " Warning : Incompatible TV system setting !" and it won't play ...any ideas would be really welcome - thanks , John N.

Since it's a home made DVD there will be no region encoding present. So it must be that you have quite an old DVD player, as most recent models will play both PAL and NTSC format discs with compatible TV's. Why not try it in a friends dvd player, see if it works then. Also possible that the disc was not finalised, is it a + or - disc?

Search on the Internet. There are free programs out there that will convert the UK system (PAL) to the USA system (NTSC). Or you could buy one. They are not expensive. But your main problem is this PAL to NTSC and vice versa, if you want to exchange DVDs with the US. If you want to view FILMS from the US, then it is a different issue... REGION and for that take your player to the dealers and have them turn your player into a multi-region one. That is what I did with my Sony DVD Recorder/player.

The USA uses the NTSC Format, but Europe uses PAL.
Sometimes, it don't work when you want to play a PAL-DVD with an NTSC-Devices or NTSC-DVD with PAL. It also can be the country code, the USA've got code 1, Europe and Japan got code 2 for DVD.

The formats are different between Europe and USA. Copy the disc using DVD Shrink - it's a free program that allows you to burn with different region formats (or region free, so it works everywhere).
