The cough, may actually be a lean pop from under the hood
and the engine shaking is probably from dropping one or more
cylinders (missfire) sounds like you need a mechanic...

One plug is not always firing (runs rough) and it's a build up of fuel in that cylinder and then ignites that is causing the back fire.
a. Bad ignition module
b. Cracked distributor cap
c. Bad spark plug wire
d. Bad spark plug
Or you need to start using Granny's corn sqeezens for an octane booster and fuel system cleaner, your engine will spit up whatever it swallowed.

Could be a couple of things but here's the common ones;
check the spark plug cables and condenser, replace
Bad fuel/ dirty injector
Bad timing
But most likely its the spark cables and or condenser. Check those first.

One or a couple of cylinders doesnt have combustion and gas is going out in your exhaust pipe and ignites causing the boom.
Engine out of balance which causing the vibration.
Check your spark plugs and spark plug leads. Really I would change them. Thats a cheap test. Most likelly corrects it, if not. you might have a burned valve which will be a major repair.

Could be the igntion system or fuel system...Take it to the dealer
and have them check it out....Just make sure you tell to notify
you before they perform any work! You will ruin your car if you
keep driving it in this condition...Good Luck!
