If you personally ask me, Communication is a big one, if you can't communicate with the other person, you were doomed from the beginning, also, Compromise. If you can't compromise, then there will be lots of fighting since, you'll both want it your way, and wont be able to communicate with each other to resolve your problems. I also believe, Trust and Faith in each other is very important, if you're constantly asking the other person, where they're going, been, and same with you, it will cause nothing but problems. Being a good listener wouldn't hurt also.

Accepting their friends and families. If you show any negative vibes toward any of them, your partner might feel as though it's an attack on them.

Give them some room and time for themselves to. Sometimes, you have to get away from your partner and relax either by yourself, or with some family and friends.

Putting their needs before yours is also a good idea. Let's say you both have cars and both break down, if you try and fix your problems and not help them with theirs, they will probably feel that you don't care about theirs.

Last and very important, Sex. Denying sex to your partner, will only push them away from you, and you from them. And, they will probably end up getting it from somewhere else. Never, ever use sex as a punishment, you might as well ask for a divorce.

With all that said, none of it will work, if you guys don't put the effort into it. It will all fall apart if you expect it to be like a fairy tale, a happy ever after ending, where there is no work involved in keeping the relationship going.

P.S Being romantic and surprising your partner, and being spontaneous, doesn't hurt. If your the same person day in day out, they will get tired. People love surprises and changes. As long as its good. You don't want to come home one day and tell your partner that you just killed someone, and that you might have to move to a different country and change your identity. Now that would be a bad surprise.
