Next number is 41.
The number after 41 should be 40.
16+9 = 25
25+7 = 32
32+5 = 37
37+3 = 40
40+1 = 41
41+ (-1) = 40

So simple!!!!!
it's 41.
Why?
here's a small trick to solve such questions (only the simple ones!!!):
find the difference between each two numbers:
25 - 16 = 9
32 - 25 = 7
37 - 32 = 5
40 - 37 = 3
so..... 9, 7, 5, 3, then what?!!!!!
The next Step should be 1, then the next number should be 41 !!!!!
Enjoy ;)

The difference between each number reduces by 2 each time....i.e. from 16 to 25 is a difference of plus 9, then to 32 it is a difference of plus 7 etc
After 41, the next number would seem to be 40 again as the difference would become minus 1.....
