This conspiracy theory makes no sense to me. If the fleet at Pearl was in a high state of readiness the attack could of been repulsed. Do the conspiracy theorists really think that if the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor but were driven off, the American people wouldn't want war with Japan? Wouldn't a succesful defense of Pearl Harbor make FDR look good and be great for morale, and involve the US in the war in any case? If an American ship had of spotted the Japanese fleet headed towards Honolulu by chance, did FDR plan to say, "please just ignore those Japanese carriers, it's supposed to be a suprise"?

All the conspiracy theories are coming from people with the same mind set, whether it's area 51, 9/11, JFK, or anything else. They like the idea that the government tried to outsmart them, but they won't fall for it because they're smarter yet. It's egotism.
The President and the Secretary of State knew damned well 12 hours beforehand that the Japs were going to war, because they had decoded the final telegram to the Japanese Ambassador in Washington. But (1) they had no other information on what the first Japanese action might be, and (2) any careful analysis of the options would have put such a massive attack on Pearl Harbour way down the list. All the same, there was less urgency shown in bringing the armed forces onto a war footing than perhaps ought to have been, and today's conspiracy theorists need no more than that to build on.

In reading different books I strongly believe that British Intelligence knew at least months in advance of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The British had a major code breaking operation going on from the mid 1930's on. I believe that hints were dropped to American diplomats and that Churchill knew a great deal more than he let on. A cable FDR sent to Churchill shortly after the U.S. declared war on Germany states clearly the news Churchill had been waiting for the U.S. would bail Britain out of the war. i believe that FDR did expect some sort of attack but I also believed that he was absolutely horrified by what ended up happening a fact which must have tormented him. More concrete proof, macarthur for the first part of the war was left to fight alone in the pacific while there was great political and social pressure to help our fellow White Anglo Saxon Protestants in Europe

I personally do not believe this conspiracy theory.
But....in talking to those who do - they always raise the facts that the Jap naval code had been broken, all of the American flattops were out of harbour during the attack and congress was overwhelmingly against participation in war in Europe or against Japan.
Help you out?

People have a hard time understanding why anyone would want to do them harm. The same thing happened with the whole 9/11 conspiracy theory.

I hate conspiracy theories. It's like people go down to Nevada nowadays just to visit Area 51. I would rather go down to play some craps and roullette, visit restaurants and a few bars, and go dancing.

people are comparing pearl harbour to 9/11. just as in the case of 9/11, pearl harbour served to make the people understand the president's point of view. some may see that as quite convenient.

you are correct. the conspiracy would have had to have been in league with japan, and they were not talking to anybody, least of all their enemy, Britain did not want another theater of war opening in the pacific tying up the resources of their ally the US, so who was conspiring with whom. FL
