I think its because when you do a research your searching for something new based on facts and published materials. It's not necessarily a "new thing". It's just that, it was left out and was left undiscovered before. That's why scientist research it to find what's being missed. And then publish it. When you'll check on approved researched studies, you'll see a bunch of reference materials being used to back-up the discovery, and no one would believe you if you'll just present something new altogether with all new theories and etc. And I doubt if you could find one too. ;-)

As Sir Isaac Newton once stated, "If I have suceeded, then it is because I have stood on the shoulders of giants."

"Research" is an appropriate term, as it literally means to "search again". There is nothing totally new in the world, and whatever is discovered, has leveraged the work and knowledge of those that have come before us.

So, then, is your point a linguistic one? That the thing should be called "search" as opposed to "re-search"? Perhaps the answer is that there is nothing new under the sun. And every search, then, is necessarily a repeat of what has gone before the results of which were, unfortunately, left unpublished.

I think research, and subsequent discovery is due to steps. Along the lines of one of the previous answers, we take what we already know, re-search in a different fashion, and we add to what we know...
In order for research results to be considered valid by the scientific community and for us to even be sure of what it is we are attempting to do, the foundation for the research must be built upon previous, established research.
